Center for Global Health

Student Research Scholar Program

Student Associates of the Center for Global Health are eligible to apply for funds to support an 'in-house' scholar experience to work with a CGH Faculty Associate/s on specific global health research questions. This program should not be viewed as a typical internship program. Rather, it is a time to develop an initiative that has the potential to grow into a sustainable project impacting the students' career. Students could work on a research proposal, data analysis, literature review, or any number of research activities in which the Faculty Associate is engaged.

Program Guidelines

  • Funding is limited and competitive. Student Associate status does not guarantee support.
  • Funding requests must be submitted via the appropriate application.
  • A demonstration of cost sharing or in-kind support from home units will be looked upon very favorably in determining awards, particularly when accompanied by a letter from your home unit Chair summarizing such support.
  • Support covers temporary hourly wages for up to 4 months, and does not include tuition, fees, or health care.
  • At the time of request, Student Associates must identify 1-2 CGH Faculty Associates who have agreed to include the student in an activity/project exploring specific global health research questions. Faculty Associates are listed on the Center website.
  • The student can become engaged in a new project or in an ongoing project.
  • Undergraduate level funding is available for up to 4 months at the rate of $12/hr (up to $2000/month).
  • Masters level funding is available for up to 4 months at the rate of $17/hr
    (up to $2720/month).
  • Doctoral level funding is available for up to 4 months at the rate of $20/hr
    (up to $3200/month).
  • It is expected that students participating in the program will be on the Ann Arbor campus throughout the duration of the program and plan to spend time contributing to the intellectual work around global health being encouraged by the Center.
  • It is the responsibility of the Student Associate to consider any affect program participation will have on their financial aid and/or academic requirements and timeline.
  • Recipients of this award will be expected to submit a final report.
  • As with all relevant academic work, it is expected that Student Associates acknowledge their Center for Global Health affiliation in their work. Suggested wording is "Supported, in part, by the University of Michigan Center for Global Health."

Application Process

Student Associates should complete the application and send it to cghprograms@umich.edu. Applications will be reviewed by CGH Internal Advisory Council members, and applicants notified according to the timetable
